There is a lot confusing information out there about diabetes, especially about what we should and shouldn't eat. Most of us receive plenty of conflicting information and advice about what we should do. Dr. Bernstein is quite eloquent in his explanations of his very low carbohydrate diet. Some people do very well on the low-carb plans. Others find them impossible to stick with and a set-up for failure. Some plans offer "cures" for diabetes if you eat certain foods or take certain herbs. I believe it comes down to this: The best food and diet plan for diabetes is the one you will stick with.

You are the captain of your medical team. Ultimately, you have to decide what is best for you. You and those immediately around you are the people that have to live with the decisions you make. You have to educate yourself, listen to your team, and discover over time the best food plan for you. Getting and keeping your blood sugar under control is your goal -- it is the best way to prevent long term complications of diabetes and to live a happy and healthy life.

Each of us has the responsibility to work with our health care team including physician, dietician and certified diabetes educator to help us develop the best food plan for us. For the purposes of this website, we will be focusing on the ADA recommended diet, which is a healthy, well balanced diet, low in fat, especially trans fat and saturated fat, moderate in salt and sugar, and contains fiber rich foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Nothing in this website is intended to replace medical advice. I am not a doctor nor a certified diabetes educator. The information here is based on my personal experience caring for my own diabetes. Before making changes in your diet you should talk with your doctor or CDE.
